I am an experienced PM but a newbie to JIRA. I have setup a project for a product development team and they have been creating their tasks in a brainstorming way. They now want to reorganise things a little and this means making some tasks sub-tasks. In almost every other PM software I have used this is a simple task of reordering tasks and “indenting” them or drag/drop under a parent.
From what I have read, the only way to do this in Jira is to do a bulk move which if true is a really clumsy process. Is there a better way?
Also, how can I add more levels to task management …I can only find task/sub-task. Surely you can more levels than this?
@Matthew Stedman welcome to the Atlassian community
You are correct that there is only task and sub tasks. Most people will link issues and then create additional links or sub tasks under those to create a hierarchy. There are several apps that provide hierarchy if you need that structure in your project.
You are also correct that out of the box you have to move them to make them a sub task.
Many thanks for your assistance clarifying things. I don’t think Jira is going to work for our style of project and approach.

@Matthew Stedman Sorry to hear that. I have used Jira for many years as well as other project management products. I keep going back to Jira because of the transparency, open collaboration and flexibility it provides. I would recommend asking additional questions or sharing what you are trying to specifically do here in the community. If there is something that can no be done out of the box there is most likely an app that will meet your needs.

Hi @Matthew Stedman !
Welcome to the Atlassian Community!
I want to recommend you the Community video library and an article - Understanding issue types in Jira , that helps you to understand Jira's out-of-the-box issue hierarchy.
You can also find a comfortable app for your case on the Atlassian Marketplace.
For example, my company has similar wishes and we use Structure - Project Management at Scale .
All apps have a trial period during which you can test the functionality for your needs.
Best regards,
Alexander
