Hi!
I have a project where I have two teams working simultaniously on a sprint to onboard different departments into the same CRM system. As the PM i need to arrange the JIRA board(s).
I would highly appreciate your best practices and tips here to facilitate it. Do I create a project per team ? Do i have one backlog or multiple ? Can I have two sprints in a project? So: all input is highly appreciated!
So it really depends as you might expect. But let me give you some thoughts here that might hit home for you and ultimately help you out.
The benefits of having a single board is that if the team has a relatively common goal then they can move collectively together more easily. Moreover as a scrum master or project manager in control of this board it will be much easier to work than multiple boards.
Now if the teams are very independent and will work on different schedules and they will plan their sprints individually and don't want to be bothered with the clutter of other team's backlog then multiple boards is often best. In this case you could have a scrum of scrums approach where you have a master board that gives you visibility of all the individual boards.
Personally, I tend to always start with the idea of using a single board and trying to keep it simple. I would probably start by trying to answer this one very important question - what solution will make the individual teams work is efficiently as possible? The answer to that question should drive your solution even if it means that you as a PM have a bit more overhead in your job. Your job is a PM is to insure that the project team doesn't have any avoidable barriers.
In your case maybe a single backlog will work for planning and then use either a single sprint or run parallel sprints.
Sounds like a smart solution to have 1 backlog and board with multiple active sprints. Can you elaborate a little on running multiple sprints from a single backlog? That should impact reporting.....?

Hi @Desiree Meijne-Schmit , it is simply allowing for parallel sprints. You can find out about running parallel sprints here - https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/use-parallel-sprints/

@Jack Brickey We unfortunately have a team managed project setup in JIRA. The link you shared is for company managed setups, so this is not possible for me. Any suggestions you might have to do the same in a team managed setup? I was not able to find it in the help pages so far...

Personally, we have stopped using Team managed projects because of the limited functionality which you have just discovered. I shut-off allowing new Team projects getting created, because eventually people using team projects need help with a feature that is not supported. And then I get stuck helping them convert them over to a company project.

Ironically, they have just released parallel sprints for team managed projects @Ken Siskind @Desiree Meijne-Schmit so hopefully that has removed one of your teams blockers.
