Map custom domain to Jira Software Cloud instance

ad79 June 14, 2020

I am currently trying out the free version of Jira Software and Service Desk and I can get to my login page by navigating to 'mydomain.atlassian.net.'  What I would like to do though is map a custom domain to 'mydomain.atlassian.net.'

Essentially, I would like to create a domain like 'support.mydomain.com' and have it navigate to 'mydomain.atlassian.net.'

When I try to update the 'A' record for this, its saying I need to put in IP format and not an alias name like ''mydomain.atlassian.net.'

Any idea how I may be able to do this?

Thank you for you help in advance.

An A record needs to be a definitive IP address.

So what you're trying to do here simply won't work.

First, DNS is the wrong level to do it - Atlassian Cloud runs on a range of IP addresses, and there's no guarantee that the address of your particular site will be the same.  So you can't do it with DNS

Second, the systems have a single definitive location (base url) and they will not function correctly if you use a different one.  Using a different one won't quite break anything, but you'll get failures if you try to access a system over the wrong url.  So mapping a custom domain is pointless - some of it will fail, and the application will present the user with links to the base url so they will rapidly end up using that as they try to navigate.

The best you can do here is fire up a web server that you can map to a sinlge point in your DNS and have it fire up a page that simply redirects people to the actual server.

However, if you want to change your Cloud url (from xxx.atlassian.net to yyy.atlassian.net) you can raise a support request with Atlassian - they will change it for you.
