Migrate from JIRA v6.1 server to JIRA Cloud

We would like to potentially migrate from JIRA v6.1 server to JIRA Cloud.  My understanding is that we would still need to upgrade our Server installation to a newer version before being able to migrate to the cloud.  Part of our rationale for migrating to the cloud is to avoid this in the first place.  If this is necessary, what version do we need to update to before migrating to the cloud?  Can this be done is one step or do we need intermediate builds to accomplish this?
