Migrate from JIRA v6.1 to JIRA 7.13 on a new server

Brian Pope May 7, 2020

We need to migrate from JIRA v6.1 to JIRA 7.13 on a new server

JIRA v6.1 is currently running on Windows Server 2008 R2 connecting to the database running SQL Server 2008.  The new server is Windows Server 2016 with SQL Server 2016

Can I install JIRA 7.13 on the new server, export the JIRA 6.1 data to xml on the old server,  then import the 6.1 xml data on the new server?

JIRA is not the only application using the current application and database servers.  The new servers do not have any other applications using them yet.

Hi Brian,

welcome to the Atlassian Community!

While I understand where you are coming from and what the challenges are there is a Knowledge Base entry about XML backup and restore which does not look very promising:
https://confluence.atlassian.com/jirakb/xml-backup-and-restore-troubleshooting-203394750.html

I restored from XML backup several times and it worked ok - but in any case you will need to do your own tests on non-production environments.

As for the version jump it might be problematic nevertheless. Maybe some other users around here can say something to the specific version leap - from my point of view the easiest option would be to try with non-production systems.

Cheers,
Daniel

Thank for pointing this out, I did not have anything specific to point to backing up what I had heard.  I think we are making progress determining the upgrade path.  We have a much better idea how long steps will take based on our current amount of data.  We have finally identified a non-production server we can use for a test environment.  It also appears that we will be able to accomplish what we need without doing the XML backup restore.
