Migration jira software data center

Hi, 

we are currently on version 7.1.10 of jira core, we would like to pass to the software data center version.
is it necessary to upgrade to the core version 8.5 then to pass to the software data center version or there is another way ?

Atlassian in their documentation states that you should upgrade to the latest version of Jira then do the migration.
