Hello there,

about half year ago our company was migrated to Cloud, as the guys from partner organization said that its future and its perfect.

Actually, whole organization is struggling, the UX is terrible, its changing all the time, we cannot control releases and changes in the Jira, we are missing some of our hardware integrations, its slow, very often unresponsive, logging time with Tempo is one big pain.

Trying to integrate non standard stuff or write down some custom app is almost impossible.

The C level decided that this was a mistake and we will move back to DC, but now, without the partner organization, due to budget cuts.

Question is - there is some tool to migrate Data Center -> Cloud, but no tool to migrate the other way. Or am I missing something? We still have backups from last year, but missing a lot of data :-(

Any idea how to approach this issue without additional pain?

Thanks, Peter

Hi @Petr Drozd

The difficulties you have described are unfortunately common when cloud migrations aren't well-planned and executed.

You are right that the standard migration path is typically from data center to cloud and not the other way around and reversing the move may not seem straightforward, given that you have accumulated months of data since the initial move. You may face challenges like -

  1. Risk of data loss when restoring from Cloud to Data Center (attachments, user data, history, etc.)
  2. Rebuilding workflows, fields, and permissions manually — often slow and error-prone.
  3. Downtime during migration, impacting productivity.

You could explore the Jira Cloud Rest API, but this requires technical expertise and careful mapping between the two systems. An Atlassian and Accenture Partner for an agile migration without downtime or disruption can be a good fit. Solutions like OpsHub offer –

  1. Accurate, high-fidelity migrations from cloud to DC — preserving all rich data.
  2. Automated mapping of workflows, fields, and configurations — reducing manual work and inconsistencies.
  3. No system or operational downtime, allowing you to access both systems simultaneously while the migration is in progress, eliminating productivity loss and business disruptions.
  4. Configurable UI that lets you reuse migration mappings across projects.

Dear @Petr Drozd I work for Exalate

Sounds like a rough transition. You’re right—most tooling focuses on Cloud to DC migrations being the rare case, so options are limited.

That said, you might want to check out Exalate. It’s not a migration tool per se, but it can help you sync Jira Cloud and DC instances. You could use it to gradually move data back—issues, comments, attachments, etc.—with custom rules and less downtime.

Might be a practical path if you’re missing some data and want to avoid another all-at-once lift.
