Missing epic's in backlog

Hey everyone, I would like your help.

As you can see below in the backlog, I can see all kinds of issue types, including initiative (which is higher than an epic). In the Epic panel, you can see the epics, but for some reason, I can't see the epics in the backlog( They're not in Done status, they're in New status).
In the filter of this board. it include them, I can see them in the filter when I get the results.

I'm missing something, I don't know what it is, I'm just missing something.

Your help is very much appreciated!

Thanks !

Hi, @Eran Roiter! đź‘‹

Epics won’t appear alongside child issues in the Backlog - that's expected behavior.

What worked for me as a workaround is displaying the Parent field in the backlog.

You can enable this by going to:
Board settings > Layout > Card layout > Backlog, and then add the "Parent" field.

That way, you’ll at least see which epic each issue belongs to. Hope that helps! ✨

For work items that have an epic as parent, this is even displayed by default, so you don't even have to enable anything there.

The fact that you don't see epics in the actual list, is because Epics can't be added to a sprint of a scrum board. They are a special work type that is used to help you organise and plan more effectively for the stories (and other work items) your team is actually going to work on in a sprint.

You might wonder why you can see initiatives then. Simply put, this is because they are essentially standard work types in Jira that don't have the specific characteristics of epics. There is no such thing as an initiative panel. Since you are probably never going to put initiatives in a sprint, it might be a good idea to exclude them from your board filter as well.

If you want to view your epics on a board, you can do so. But it has to be a kanban board then. In there, you can decide if you want to display your epics in a similar panel or as cards on the board.
