Monitoring of Atlassian apps in 2020?

Kim Slotte August 27, 2020

We plan to make a monitoring solution for Atlassian applications.  There exist several monitoring tools for Jira and other Atlassian products. Some are listed at https://confluence.atlassian.com/enterprise/tools-for-monitoring-your-data-center-application-942851919.html

What are the pros and cons for each tool? Any advise to which tools to evaluate further? Any clear winners or TOP3 in 2020? Looking mostly on Server installations. Support for Cloud would be also good (may be limited what you can monitor).

Hi Kim,

great question and important as well.
The page you have mentioned lines out a good basis where to start from. The question as for 'the best tool' is quite tricky - there are probably sysadmins who are in love with "their" solution, others prefer other solution - the same as with linux distros from what I have observed (just to name a comparison).

Somewhat popular must be a combination of "Prometheus Exporter" (App) with Prometheus and Grafana in the end. Some admins were referencing to exact this setup recently.

JMX monitoring (in that case also along the line with Grafana in the end but without the Prometheus part) is also common from what I encountered.

Have you already seen the awesome article here for monitoring? It provides some good examples:
https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-articles/Monitoring-of-Atlassian-applications-with-Prometheus/ba-p/811100

Also not a direct answer by means of a "choose this tool and all will be fine" but a more high-level discussion (which I found to be useful) were posted here:
https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-discussions/How-are-you-monitoring-your-Atlassian-stack/m-p/727529#M2302

A final general thought, but also not addressing the question in its core as such, is to start with the evaluation of a solution and to adjust in small steps. For example I saw a scenario when JMX monitoring was added later on - but the monitoring for basis OS parameters like CPU load, memory consumption, disk space (to only name a few) was introduced same time as Jira.

I hope this helps to get some useful hints.

Cheers,
Daniel
