Move an epic to another Component

Myriam January 27, 2022

Hi everyone,

The Jira Specialist who helped me designing a project has gone and I do not have sufficient knowledge to bring modifications to it. And this project is used by different teams and I'm afraid of any impact on other projects. I have been given the necessary rights to make the changes.

In few words, there are components and epics which are today not modifiable in terms of labels. Epics are attached to their corresponding component and cannot be moved to another comp. And we want to keep this organisation.

But when a user creates an issue in a specific epic, and realized he should have assigned the issue to another epic, the project does not allow to do it.

Could anyone help me ? Probably a simple thing, but an irritating one for the users.

thank you

Esme

Hi Esmeralda - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

I am having a little trouble following what the problem is. But just some clarification, Epics are not in Components and you don't move Epics to Components. Components are unique to each project and can be appliced to Epics in that same project.

So if your Epic doesn't have the component available that you want to use, then you need to add that component on the project for that Epic.

Next - what type of project is this? Team-managed? Company-managed? Jira Work Mangement?

Finally, can you give some exact examples of what you are trying to do?

The process you describe cannot work within Jira due to the relationship between projects, components, and Epics. Users will be frequently wrong.

Hi John ,

thank you very much for your answers.

My project is a  company managed project. Basically, I am running a deploiement project in many countries.

I have a "master" project in which I am designing the whole structure : component list, epic list and boards.

than I copy the master project for each of the teams that will be performing the same project in their different countries.

Let's give an example: in a component A, there a EpicA, EpicB, EpicC,etc.

a user is creating a issue and assigned this issue to (ComponentA, EpicA).

then when discussing during a ceremony, he realised that he should have assigned the issue into EpicB. I still do not find the way to move the issue into the right epic.

the only solution the user found is to delete the issue and re-create it into EpicB.

thank you

Hi @Esme  As per your query , in the last para " But when a user creates an issue in a specific epic, and realized he should have assigned the issue to another epic, the project does not allow to do it." when the user creates the epic issue in that you will not be able to use epic link .epic link.png

you might get this type of error . So the issue must be of story or task so that u can use the epic link to assign issue with other .

And about your Component  can you share some screenshot for better understanding .

Thanks !!

Hi @John Funk , hi @RISHAV KUMAR GUPTA

thank you so much for your help.

in the structure of my project, we defined a finite list of Components and in each component, we also defined a list of Epics.

then when a user wants to create an issue, he first selects a component then he selects an epic.

And sometimes they select the wrong epic and would like to move the issue to another epic.

I finally found the way to move the issue to another epic. The UX was not very clear enough.

thank you to both of you
