Moving Issues from a Team Managed Project to a Company Managed Project

I am currently having issues with moving Stories from a Team Managed Project to a Company Managed Project - I found an article that stated it can be done as long as the site administrator creates similar fields in the company managed project that are in the team managed project.

I am currently the site administrator and not only did I setup the custom fields in the company managed project but also replicated the workflow.  The problem is when I go to move the issues from the team managed project to the company managed project it is removing all of the custom fields.  Most of these fields are simple text boxes nothing crazy, I have tried using Deep Clone but have had the same issue occur but was curious to see if anyone had a similar issues.  I have also opened a support case as this is getting frustrating.

Hi @Robert.Ogden and welcome to the community,

According to the documentation, as and you well stated:

Custom fields: If you use custom fields in your team-managed project, a Jira admin needs to recreate the fields and add them to screen schemes and field configurations in your company-managed project. Custom field data will need to be recreated, otherwise it will be lost.

With that said, can you confirm that any of your custom field has successfully transferred to your CMP project? Or can you see if any value was transferred to any issue?

Alex

Thank you so much for responding and I am the system admin for my Jira Cloud instance and I created the same custom fields that were in my Team Managed Project within my Company Managed Project.  I did a test with one story moved it from the team managed to the company managed and I cand confirm that none of the custom fields copied over - I have attached a screenshot of the message I recieved before moving the one issue over.  The tool is stating that it is removing all of the custom fields - I am not sure what else to do.  One issue is that I have a huge number of team managed projects that want to convert over to company managed, these project also have huge number of issues associated with them.Screenshot 2023-01-03 143759.png

Question: Have you added these custom fields to the screens of e.g. the story?

Alex - yes I have added the custom fields to the Jira Story in the company managed project.

@Robert.Ogden sorry for asking the previous question. :/

I did try myself to move issues, and inspite of having created a same CF, the field was set to be removed. After that, I've found out this open issue https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JSWCLOUD-17437 which describes the problem you are facing. And unfortunately this is not fixed :/

The previous issue was duplicated by this issue https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JSWCLOUD-17263 which in my humble opinion describes your problem better.

Alex

Thank you so much for sending me those and I will take a look - also I did a test of going from the company managed project to the team managed project - comments and attachments came over but none of the custom fields.

Thanks

Notice in the quoted text is says:

Custom field data will need to be recreated, otherwise it will be lost.

The data in the custom fields will be lost. It doesn't actually matter whether or not you have created matching custom fields in the destination project. The Move Issue process will not move the data itself.

The first part of the paragraph about needing to recreate the fields is not trying to imply that if you create them then the data will be moved. It is only saying that you need to recreate the custom fields if you want to have those same fields available.

For Company Managed projects the custom fields are defined globally and you can select which ones to include for a specific Company Managed project.

For Team Managed projects the custom fields are defined only within a single project and it is not possible to share them or pull them into another project from a global list yet.

So, when moving issues between a Team Managed and Company Managed projects, the custom fields in the Team Managed project are not available in the global Custom Fields list for use in the Company Managed project. For that reason, you need to recreate the custom fields.

A good workaround is to do migration using export/import by CSV. But in this way, you can´t bring the attachments.
