Hi @Christos_Stentoumis

This is not possible at the moment in Next-Gen - each project is treated separately and stories can only be children of Epics within the same project.

You can still use Classic Projects for this though - where Epic Links aren't locked to one project :)

There is a suggestion to enhance this - vote for it / follow it here: JSWCLOUD-18377

You can also keep an eye on what's coming soon on the public roadmap

Hi, thank you for the immediate answer!

I am stuck in a situation where I cannot fully exploit Jira capabilities and I would really appreciate some advice. We have 3 different teams (a sum of 15 members), each with its expertise, and they all work in the same RnD + production projects. So I need to organize them in boards per team and have the same epics and releases (or some kind of milestones) to track the work done in an aile manner, but also keep an eye on the customers' deadline.

Next-gen are simple enough and offer roadmaps, but roadmaps

  1. do not show the release dates and the issue dates, only epics
  2. epics are not cross-project

Classic, on the other hand

  1. lacks roadmaps and
  2. simplicity for human beings.

I tried to activate portfolio to coordinate teams and company projects, but I found that this is not a good option for next-gen. I also looked the release plan for next-gen and I cannot understand the direction I should move. Will next-gen ever become a cross-project tool to control the development across the company?

Instead of portfolio, is there another plugin to do the tricks needed?

Assuming you need to use different projects for each team ...

1. Next-gen projects

- you won't be able to share Epics across. You could potentially create Epic with the same name in each of the projects and use confluence macro for next-gen roadmaps to see roadmap from each epic on one page

OR you can use JQL to see the status of the issues linked to these epics (you can again include a list in confluence page)

2. Classic projects

- on the Atlassian summit, they announced that Epic Roadmaps are going to be rolling out to Classic projects too in the next ~6 months (exciting!)

- You can share epics across the projects ✅

Releases functionality is a bit more complicated. There isn't a way to share releases across projects in Jira (in any type of project) but there are marketplace apps that do this.

We have an app that allows you to create a cross-project release for both Classic and Next-gen, shows releases on a roadmap and a lot of other things. It's less complicated then Portfolio so if that option failed, you can have a look 👉Swanly - Release Management Timeline

If the main reason to stay with next-gen is roadmaps I would probably just create some workaround for epics or use Next-gen for now and wait for roadmaps in classic so you can share epic. For releases, you'll need to use the app.

It's possible. But not in Next gen. You need a board, an epic and a classic project. In a board, you would need to specify the epic. Let say if the epic is created in project A but will also be used in project B, in the board, you would need to include Epic from project A in the board filter. Basically, you would need a custom board that has Epic from another projects.

In Next Gen, this is unfortunately not possible. :(
