Hello All,
I appreciate your interest trying to help our issue.
We have a large requirement for a certain Jira use case, and POC was created where Epic issue type was used due to its functionality that perfectly fits the requiremets:
1. Epic name displayed automatically on child issues
2. Create child from epic view
3. Have separate linking functionality besides relationship links
So the need to is have issue type with exactly same functionality as epic but with a different name.
Any input will be greatly appreciated!
No, there's no way to use another issue type as though it is an Epic.
You can do bits of it with apps, but to get the more powerful parts of Epic handling would require you to rewrite Jira.
Ok, we will use Epics for now, but will build out custom config to mimic some of the functionality in custom issue type.
Thank you for your responses.

Hi Nic,
I understand that, we can't rename epic since we will still need it.
But is there a similar way to create link with color coding, so we can link issues to it and have it displayed like epic links?

Only the standard Epic issue type can be used as an Epic in Jira.
You can rename Epic if you want, but you can't ask other issue types to work as Epics
If you do rename it, bear in mind it's just the issue type name that changes. Stuff like the Epic report, Epic Status, Epic link and so-on will all remain named as Epic related.
