Need to set Alarms

Hi ,

I want to set Alarms on fields like for e.g. "End Date of Project" . I want to know what are the possible options? Pls elaborate options with buying plugin and other options which can be easily done without any requirement of licensed plugin? .Also need to know is there anything like when user logs in pop-up should be blinking say before 3 days etc. If possible please send steps for the same.
