New work transition experience, driving me insane - how do I create a filter?

I am almost embarressed to ask this question, as it was so simple in the old 'view'.

The company in which I am working has forced the "New work transition experience" on us, and we can no longer choose to revert back to the old experience.

Myself and my colleagues REALLY do not like it. It was much eaiser to select a project and 'work in it' before. Now, the left menu appears to be static, allowing to choose Projects, Filters, Dashboards, Teams etc. The big problem I have, I can't choose a Project, as I can only choose a Board within the project.
Once chosen, the static left menu remains, and what I would hope to see here, is shown across the top of the screen (I have to change EVERY BOARD to show List as my default view, as well as all re-order my preferred items).

Anyway >>> How should I create a filter for a project?  It was so intuitive before, now that I can't go back to the old view, I can't remember how it was acheived so easily!!!

The only way I have been able to do this, is to choose Filters from the Static menu on the left. This means that there is no current project, so I have to choose an existing filter, and then modify it. Surely no developer would think that is OK?
NB There is Search Work Items directly under Filters, but that appears to show every project within the whole company (?!?!?!) TBH I don't actually know what a work item is, and to be really honest, I DON'T CARE! I just want to filter the issues within a project to which I am assigned.

I can't believe Atlassian have completely disregarded usability in this regard, and so I am sure I must be doing something wrong. Can someone please tell what is the correct and most efficient way to write a filter FOR ALL issues within a project?

NB I have no idea if Jira admins have chosen a customised layout for this 'transition experience', or if the whole Jira Cloud community have the same views.

After cooling down from my rant, and having to accept I cannot choose a Project in its entirety (only boards), I have considered Search Work Items in a different light.

I guess a Work Item is 'anything' contained in a Jira project. The initial view is offputting, as it contains items which I have absolutely nothing to do with, but perhaps that is an overall administration problem.

Accepting the above, I assume this is the correct place to start a filter/query, and to simply choose Project from the drop down (showing most recent, so not too onerous).

Given the conclusion, I would delete this question, but it may be useful for someone to reference.

The above is not strictly correct ... somehow, after switching screens (I think switching between saved filters), I went back to Search Work Items, and I could see familiar drop down options, including Project.

Now I have 'refreshed' Search Work Items once more, by navigating elsewhere, the drop down boxes have gone. All I have is an AI prompting me to insert a 'human worded query' ....

...OK, this is because I tried AI to create my query after my previous 'answer'. It appears the browser remembers what method you last used. Once AI is selected, it doesn't show the Basic and JQL buttons. If you want to return to manual editing, you need to press X on the right side of the AI prompt.
Annoyingly, if you last attempted to use a complex query that can only run in JQL, you cannot choose the Basic option to start again. You can't even delete the query and choose Basic ... you have to delete, then select Search, then choose Basic.

I guess I will get used to it, but I much preferred the old views.

NB it is irratating that I cannot choose a Project in the Basic mode, and for AI to known that I want to query that project. If I select a Project in Basic mode, then swap to JQL, it carries the filter forward. IMO switching to AI should be intelligent enought to prompt for a query that includes the previous selected items.

IMO it was much better to choose a project, and for the related options for that project, to be shown on the left menu.

if you use the filter

assignee = currentuser() and status != done

this will pull back all work issues, no matter the project into an easy list, or create a project with a board and use the filter as the base line for the board.

Thank you for taking the time to reply.
My main problem was selecting a project in which I wanted to write a query.
I think this is complicated by the browser 'remembering' previous views, or perhaps first use doesn't actually show the drop down selections. It may be that first use defaulted to JQL for some reason, and all I needed to do was to select Basic, to return to the familiar starting point.
As I have been playing, I couldn't say for sure :)

Yes, the new view is annoying, but atlassian decided they wanted to push it out to everyone, no take-backs. So whether we like it or not, it is here to stay.
