Old View vs Current View can't log time on subtask

Zack Lindberg July 30, 2020

When I am estimating a subtask in Jira and logging time on that subtask, I can only see the estimate and time logged bubble up to the parent story when I am in the old view. Once I am in the old view and I add another subtask to provide an estimate/log time the time tracking field is nowhere to be found on that subtask. But the field does carry over to the original subtask that was created prior to toggling over to the old view.

Do I have to constantly move back and forth between the current and old view to estimate and log time properly on a subtask and then view it on the story? Seems like there should be a better way.

Hi @Zack Lindberg

Can I confirm that your issue is the visibility of Time Tracking fields between the new and old views?

A simple check first is to ensure the field is available in the right locations to be visible on a sub-task. There are different locations for setting field visibility between the New View and Classic View:

  • New View: Project Settings > Issue Layout
  • Classic View: Project Settings > Screens

^ Ensure the "Classic View" has the Log Work field (and Time Tracking if needed) as a field on the screen. Then you can access time logging fields via the edit screen - although without an estimate, it won't appear on the view screen.

You can also log work from the Classic View via the 3-dots options icon in the top-right.

As a side-note - JRACLOUD-70150 is tracking the need to roll-up sub-task time tracking to the parent in the New View.

If this isn't what you were looking for, let us know some more specifics about what is missing for you :)

Hey @Ste Wright

Yes that is correct.

I went into the settings and made sure that the fields were included in the screen scheme associated with the issue types.

I see that the time logging fields in the classic view will not appear unless there is an estimate. But I am only able to view the estimate field and provide an estimate on the new view. Once I provide the estimate on the new view and switch to classic, the time tracking fields are present.

I can't seem to find the estimate field when configuring the fields associated with the screen scheme. Only Log Work and Time Tracking.

Hi @Zack Lindberg

Time Tracking is the estimate field - it contains Original Estimate and Remaining Estimate. Adding this to the screen will allow you to access these fields in the edit screen on Classic View.
