On Kanban board, how can I add a column and associate it with a status?

On Kanban board there is an option to ADD columns. I noticed that I can add it using the configuration + ADD column option but when I go back to the board I see the following warning message: 

"This column will not show on the board without a status"

How can I associate it with a status?

  If you're the Jira admin or board admin, you can map statuses to columns by selecting the Configure option on the board, and select Columns.
