On next-gen Jira, how can workflow changes be made?

My teams are on next-gen Jira and we have having three issues:

1. We want to create a status for Code Review but cannot. To mitigate we are using Blocked and mapping it to a Column called Code Review, but it has caused some confusion for our devs.

2. Analysis and Ready for Review statuses are automatically mapped to "in progress" statuses which messes up much of our reporting. Backlog and Ready for Dev are still correctly mapped back to "To Do"

3. We have 3 statuses that are called Done - "Done" "Done!" and "Story is Done" and we cannot remove the other two.

How can I resolve these issues?

Disclaimer: I do not use NG much myself so my input is based on limited direct experience.

in NG:

  • Statuses = Columns on boards so you can simply click the "+" to add a new column and drag to where you want it in the workflow. Now if you already have a "Code Review" column it will give you an error indicating such.
  • you speak of mapping statuses but in NG there is not mapping, statuses = columns.
  • Workflows are simple - they move L->R
  • You mention you cannot remove statuses/columns. I would like to better understand this. can you elaborate, e.g. how are you trying to delete. Are you the owner of the project?
  • That is a lot of 'done' statuses and seems confusing to me. just an opinion.

One side note from me: I was once quite surprised to learn that in NG there is no workflow design necessary as we know it from classic Jira. But the simplicy has its price - you won't be able to design variants and optional flows. Just as @Jack Brickey has replied - your workflow in NG needs to be very simple from left to right. But too many 'Done' statuses will spoil the workflow in NG and in Jira classic.  It's better to stick with one definition of done and one status called Done.

As for question 3 - NG requires at least one status. You can normally delete other statuses as long as you have one left. You would need to provide a screenshot to better understand your issue.

Anyway, for me many processes in Jira are often too complex for NG to be enough for users so it is still a sort of 'curiosity'.

This is 1) where you can see Code Review column but with a blocked status because we don't have the option to create a Code Review status.

This is 2) where all the way on the right you can see that in the "in Progress" section it counts Analysis and Ready for Review as in progress. Screen Shot 2019-04-30 at 2.46.57 PM.png

For 3) I am an admin on the project but not the owner, and so i have no access to changing the workflows it would seem. Mostly I'm curious where all these 3 come from.

@Allison Hytha ,

image 1 is not from a NG project so now I’m thinking your questions simply are for a Classic project. The second image is what is shown in the Version report.

Thanks for enslosing the screenshots. It looks to me that you think that you use the NextGet type of project but by looking at the screenshots I am sure you are not.

Number 1) - this is a configuration of classic Kanban board. The blocked status can be changed by modifying the workflow. The NextGen Kanban config is simple and looks different - see below.

Number 2) - Analysis and Ready for Review are counted as In Progress, because the status types in your workflow are of that type. You need to modify the status type settings

And, by the way, there is no view like that in the NextGen project. This is the Release report view in a classic Jira project. See below and compare similarities.

Number 3) I guess you do not administer your Jira instance. It is high time to talk to your Jira administrator and design together your workflows, status types and project configuration.
