One more question about how to create a project based on a custom template

jbelin April 16, 2022

This is what I want to achieve. Create a new project with a specific configuration: Kanban, custom workflow, board columns that corresponds. It is such a basic need that one would think it was self evident how to do it, maybe I am stupid but I have not found a way to do it or a solution in the community. Using the "Share settings with an existing project" creates a project without a board. Any suggestions?

Hey @jbelin, sharing settings with an existing project doesn't encompass boards, as they are based on the underlying filter. You can copy boards and update their filters. There is a  feature request that you can vote on and add yourself as a watcher to receive notifications from now on.

As you know, when sharing configurations, changes will impact all associated projects. Again, there isn't an out-of-the-box feature to handle it, but you will find marketplace apps that give you the ability to clone project configurations and, in turn, make them specific/unique to the new project.

Thanks @Ivan Lima so what is the suggested method for creating 30+ projects that uses the same workflow and board layout?

Share. If they use the same settings but you need to make them unique, create a copy or use an app/APIs to help you accomplish that. I'd try an app since there are 30+. For agile boards, the workaround I recommend is the “copy board” function.

Copy board is quite elaborate. Create new project, goto boards, delete the board that was created for the project, copy "template" board, rename new board, assign the filter that was created for the board, place it in the new project, assign the "template" workflow scheme. Is there any simpler solution?

I believe you can script some of the steps, but I'm not aware of how you could simplify it further since Jira cloud doesn't yet offer all interfaces to allow you to clone the agile boards fully. I'm now interested in knowing what others have experienced with similar use cases. I'll get back to this thread if I spot anything that would help us accomplish it more Intelligently.
