Parent Issue Reflecting Status of Subtasks

Ben Stolman October 7, 2021

When I create an issue (parent), I have multiple subtasks (child issues).
Through automation, I have the parent issue moving along with its child issues. However, one child issue may have a different status than the other child issue. In this case, the parent issue moves to match the child issue whose status is the furthest along.

For Instance:

4 Statuses

To Do, Analysis, In Progress, Done

Subtask 1 Status: Analysis

Subtask 2 Status: In Progress

Based on the subtask statuses the Parent Issue moves to In Progress.

Is there a better way to show/represent the status of the parent?

Thank you.

Hi @Ben Stolman -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

The answer depends upon what you are trying to see/learn: how far work has progressed (latest status) or how far back is some work (earliest status), or something else.

When you are showing the parents and children on the same Jira board, this may be less relevant as you may see progress at a glance.

Kind regards,
Bill
