Prominent Way To Directly Mark Status of Issue

Hi,

This is a general Jira question but I didn't find a Jira-specific discussion and I suppose  Jira Work Management applies.

Whilst I understand that Kanban-style is the primary idea behind management of issues in Jira, I just feel maybe there could be another simpler way (Together with Kanban Boards mechanism of course) to indicate the status of an issue.

My use case is that I use Jira in other ways where the typical Kanban approach does not fit. So sometimes I am simply looking to just indicate the status of an an issue without transitioning it on the board. You know, a flexible and customisable status indicator that is prominently visible on the card itself. I believe Trello has several ways to do this; including the use of color codes.

I tried coming up with a solution by creating a custom field that is color-coded but I cannot figure out how to display both the status and the color on the card. It is possible this feature exists and I just haven't figured it out.
