I have a "sandbox" test project where new workflows, screens, and fields are being tested for new and existing issues. Once these changes are finalized, I would like to push them to some of the other existing projects that are actively used in production.
The manual way of doing this would be to create a copy of each of the schemes being used in the sandbox project, wire them all up the same way so that you have a set of test schemes and a set of copy schemes. Apply the copy schemes to the projects as needed. That way you keep the sandbox and the live schemes separate to avoid errors.
This is a very manual and annoying process. Is there no better way to accomplish pushing such changes without having to use an expensive add-on?
Do you mean that the sandbox project is in the production Jira instance? I think you should have at least 2 Jira instances. One for sandbox and one for production. You can transfer configuration using Adaptivist Project Configurator or Configuration Manager plugins.
Yes, having 2 instances of JIRA, a sandbox and a production, is indeed the way to go, and we are working towards that. However, that doesn't really make the full project scheme application process any easier. Looks like this is yet another thing that must be done through a paid plugin to achieve any sort of convenience.
