Is it possible to modify the Quick Search filters so that 'Closed' issues are not included in the results? 

Personally, I feel that closed issues should really be excluded by default and only appear in Advanced searches.

You can't alter the quick search functionality. Especially not when you're using JIRA cloud.  I guess some people like to see closed issued being returned...
