We would like to be able to create a token to be used for some automated tasks and not have this token tied to a specific user which depends on an active user account being present. Should that person be removed from our organization for whatever reason that token will no longer be valid and any automation using that token will fail.

Hi Brian!

What you can do, and probably the most common way to go about it, is to create a Service Account within your IdP / AD and assign that account a license.

You will then be able to generate an API token, or set up automations run as that account.
