Did you mean:

Add new hierarchy and make it linkable to an epic

Khaoula ATALLAH July 23, 2023

Hi,

I want to add a new Hierarchy level (and a new ticket type) and I want this level to be linkable to Epics same as Story tickets and Bug tickets.

I already added the new level which shows as Level 2 in Jira ( With Epic sits in Level 1) but still cannot link those tickets of Level to to any epic.

I have an error message when I try to link it to an epic which says the following:

"You can only set epic links for issues on the Story level. Please check your hierarchy configuration settings"

Any advice please ?

Thanks!

Hi @Khaoula ATALLAH ,

Welcome to the Atlassian community,

Out of the box Jira only supports three level but you can create new standard issue type for example Theme or Initiative and use parent link field in epic to link all the epic to that issue type.

Hello @Khaoula ATALLAH

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

If you add a new issue type above the Epic level in the Issue Type Hierarchy, you are telling Jira that you want that new issue type to be a Parent to the Epic issues.

If you want to add a new issue type that can be a Child of an Epic, like Stories and Tasks, then you add a new issues as a Standard Issue Type (Level 0).

And then do NOT explicitly add it to the Issue Type Hierarchy. Any Standard Issue Type that is not explicitly called out in the issue hierarchy will automatically be included in Level 0 (where the hierarchy says "Story") and can be made a child of an Epic
