Added Backlog column to Board, but stories with Status of Backlog aren't appearing in Backlog column

I created a column called 'Backlog' that appears as one of the Status options for Story issues. When I go to the Board, I see the Backlog column, but none of the stories with Status = Backlog appears here. How can I see them on the board? Scrum project versus Kanban.

If you go to Board settings and Columns, you will need to drag a status into the Backlog column, so that it looks a bit like this
