We had a need to add some important work into an existing release that is in progress of being executed. When this work was added, Portfolio timeline shows the work at the beginning of the release which is a few weeks in the past. So it did not apply the current date into the calculation of where it needs to fit in the timeline.
What needs to be set for it to take the current date into consideration and correct the timeline?

JIRA Portfolio is focused on planning and report on overall progress. I want to re-iterate that this is a planning tool.
The only consideration for current date is when it's calculating the expected progress of a release vs. what work has been done. These are all overall progress calculations and not individual ticket calculations. When new work is added, it is still a planning out the whole picture of the release, it does not calculate how new work fits into the current date.
If you'd like a better picture of scope changes, then using Agile Scrum Boards are likely better suited for this case.
