Hi,

My company would use JIRA: Bug Tracking Template to replace existing bug tracking system.

Is there any tutorial in JIRA to provide how to customize JIRA > Software Developer > bug tracking template being a software company bug tracking system.

Thanks,

stephen

Hi @Stephen Ho and welcome to the Community!

There are literally tons of resources that can help you get started - from more context/solution oriented documentation and tutorials, over extensive product documentation and courses in the learning center accessible via Community.

Some interesting reference may be:

Hope this helps!

Walter,

Thanks your provided information. Based on your replies, there is no such thing as Baisc 1-2-3 tutorials to adopt & customize the JIRA: Bug Tracking Template being a Bug Tracking System

I did not even find any such simple & direct tutorials amongn YouTube, JIRA Community and Google about it. My company is already in Market for many years. There are many businesss login in our in-house bug tracking system.

From existing JIRA: bug tracking template, I will need to add many workflows, add new fields in defaulted bug forms, add business logic, add more email notificaitons logic and  customize reports, etc.

It will be hard to explore whatever tutorials and articles in JIRA community to figure out workable or not on each customzie. At last, it will consume a lot of time to figure out enough resource in JIRA or not.

@Stephen Ho there is an upfront initial setup time needed to configure workflows, customizing bugs and notification. No doubt there is lot of information could seem challenging when you have to be working with timelines. If Bug capture is a priority start, there and you can build what is needed to get that working.

Varsha,
I used Copilot to provide a checklist for adopting JIRA as a bug tracking system:

✅ JIRA Bug Tracking Adoption Checklist

📌 1. Assessment & Planning

  • [ ] Define goals for using JIRA (e.g., streamline bug tracking, improve visibility).
  • [ ] Identify stakeholders (QA, developers, project managers).
  • [ ] Choose the right JIRA product and plan.
  • [ ] Evaluate current bug tracking tools and plan migration.

⚙️ 2. Setup & Configuration

  • [ ] Create a dedicated JIRA project for bug tracking.
  • [ ] Define issue types (e.g., Bug, Task, Improvement).
  • [ ] Customize workflows (e.g., Open → In Progress → Resolved → Closed).
  • [ ] Set up custom fields (e.g., severity, environment, steps to reproduce).
  • [ ] Configure user roles and permissions.

🔗 3. Integration & Migration

  • [ ] Integrate with development tools (e.g., GitHub, Bitbucket, CI/CD).
  • [ ] Import existing bugs from spreadsheets or other systems.
  • [ ] Set up email notifications and automation rules.

👥 4. Training & Onboarding

  • [ ] Provide training sessions for QA, devs, and PMs.
  • [ ] Share internal documentation or quick-start guides.
  • [ ] Assign JIRA champions or support contacts.

🧪 5. Pilot & Feedback

  • [ ] Run a pilot with a small team or project.
  • [ ] Collect feedback on usability and workflow.
  • [ ] Adjust configurations based on feedback.
  • .....

So, you can see that there no direct tutorial in JIRA community. It will take long time to adopt JIRA > Bug Tracking template as a new Bug Trackign System. But, it may end up as not workable.

If you already have established processes and business logic that need to be implemented in Jira, it might be worth consulting with an Atlassian Partner - they can save you a lot of time and money.
