Auto populate Watchers based on custom field

Nick Bookmiller July 6, 2018

I'm looking to automatically add Watchers to an issue based on a field (or combination of fields).   For example, we use "Resource Team" to delineate which technical team within our project is responsible for working on a specific issue.

When the Resource Team is set to a specific group, I would like everyone in that group to get automatically added to the Watchers list for the issue. The ultimate goal is for the affected team to receive email notifications.

If it cannot be done with Watchers, I was also consider using Group CC List to add an email DL.

Any help is appreciated.

Nick,

Look into your permission scheme. You should be able to edit and do the necessary configurations.

Thank you.  Could you please be a bit more specific?

Nick,

Scroll to Voters and Watchers Permissions

If you're a JIRA admin, you can access the Project Settings --> Permissions --> Action -->Edit permissions. Edit watchers section. Please see attached image.

Thanks.  Maybe I need to clarify a bit further.

I'd like to update Watchers based on the "Resource Team" of each Issue.

So if Issue 123 has Team A as the Resource Team, then everyone on Team A should be added as a Watcher on that Issue.

Nick,

It's recommended to use project roles in the schemes. I'm assuming the resource team is a group. If so, add the group to the scheme.

Adding a group to the project notification scheme is doable.  But as far as I know, that would automatically email that group for any issue on the entire project, which is too broad.

I'm hoping to send email notifications to each group only when the Resource Team on a particular Service Desk Issue is set to the group they're in.

Perhaps there is a setting in the project roles that I'm unaware of.
