Automation Trigger for linking Child issue to Epic

Harold Pinther December 12, 2024

Hi,

aim is to copy field value of a field from epic to all child issues linked to the epic.

Iam successfull with the first automation, when uers creating the child straight from the epic with this:

The problem now is, that users also creating childs and link them later to the epic. I need to have the same field on the child issue edited when the linking is happening. This is logic for me, but not working, any ideas?

Hi @Harold Pinther

Welcome to the community.

I expect you are using the parent field for this, correct?

This is not related to the Issue Link Parent - Child.

Example rule:

Hi @Harold Pinther-- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Adding to Marc's suggestions...

There are several cases to address for a field sync scenario.  The level of accuracy you want for the field (and when you want it) may determine the need for additional rules.  Those others include at least:

  • when an issue is created with a parent already assigned, copy the field from the parent
  • when a child is added to a parent, copy the field from the parent
  • when a child is removed from a parent, do ????
  • when a child is moved to a new parent, copy the field from the parent
  • when a person manually edits the field in a child issue of a parent, copy the field from the parent (and perhaps log / notify someone about it)
  • etc.

And depending upon how the field is used in the parent, there may be additional rules required.

Kind regards,
Bill
