Basic questions on Jira's plan function

Hi there,

I set up a plan on Jira. Now I have a couple of customization questions:

Filter option

Is there an easy way to filter out epics which are not in a certain timeframe. E.g. I want to see the epics/initiatives in the "plan" for only e.g. Jan - March 2021.

Colors of projects

I have a couple of projects set up. Example: "pro" & "tech". As you can see on the screenshot below is that the "tech" epics timeline is in a nice dark blue color (green box), however the "prod" epic timeline is in the same color like the initiative timeline which is very confusing (pink box). Is there a way to customize the colors on how the bars are displayed?

Thanks to both of you...

So yes I did already do the "color by project" setting however how unfortunate that one project has the same color as the initiative bar. But if I understand you correctly there is no way to change this currently?

As we have lots and lots of epics it is unfortunately not an option to work with labels as some folks will forget. This is why the hope was that just doing it based on project.

Hi @lisa,

As @Prince Nyeche is saying, you do have some colouring options available for the roadmap. As he points out correctly, you can find those under view settings:

You can see there that coloring them by project is an option too, but you aren't able to define those colours yourself then. Just see what works best for you.

In terms of filtering by time, leverage your releases for that. Advanced roadmaps is based on the iron triangle of planning, where you connect your scope (the roadmap) to the people doing the work (your teams) and the time dimension (the releases). If you do quarterly planning, it is not a bad idea to create quarterly releases. If you then link your issues to releases, you can filter the roadmap by release.

I would recommend to watch this video for a better understanding of the product and don't hesitate to reach out to a solutions partner to help you set things up thoroughly. This is an area where the way you work, the mindset of your teams and team members and the tools should all play together nicely ;-)

Hi @lisa

Welcome to Community! You can do that by using the Label field by tagging each issue, then go to your view settings and add a colour per each Label. not a very intuitive way as issues might bear one or more labels, I think using per Project colour would be much better but it doesn't seem to be a feature yet.

Likewise, Advanced Roadmap is not performing an Advanced filtering like JQL, so filtering out issues based on timeline might not be feasible. However you can always use the Hierarchy filters on your left side of screen and the time range filters on the right side of screen to mix and match the issues that are to be displayed. one to get the time period and another to just display only certain issue types. Although such features might be deviating from what Advanced Roadmap is actually suppose to be. which is, always have a higher perspective of activities taking place in a Project and predict possible blockers.
