Boards configuration - why not ?

Carl Rees March 6, 2019

to associate a work flow with a board why not have

Board > settings > associate workflow ?

instead of

create project

look at board - looks ok

create new workflow - looks ok

add workflow to scheme - publish / associate whatever

go back to project

click board - GET NOTHING - all isues gone and cant now use board at all

Hi Carl, and welcome to the community.

The simple answer is because a board is not a project object.

A board could include issues from different projects.  A project is the container for the issues, not the board, and that's where all the configuration is done.  A board is a view of a set of issues, taking the status it finds in the project(s) it is configured to look at.

To fix the problem you have, go back to the board and configure the columns.  As you've been changing the workflow, the most likely reason is that the new status in the workflows is not mapped into the columns.

Thanks for your replies, board not a project object, wow, didnt see that

Board > Configure > Columns ( I dont see this at all ? ) - all my projects are business projects, process or proj man.

im logged in as Jira-site manager

Did try the nxGen but found no workflows here at all, but board I could add new cols to.

as I go through my test projects i have maybe 5, in each one the board is different, based on the workflow I assumed. If the board is not a project object, they are all different because each project has a different filter and this changes the board? or each project has a different workflow and this changes the board.

If a filter changes the board, then the board should have a filter box at the top and a drop down selection or search to apply a filter to it, wouldnt that be the simplest way to manage such?

Hi @Carl Rees,

Which part of Board > Configure > Columns do you not see? Here is the path with images

If the board is not a project object, they are all different because each project has a different filter and this changes the board? or each project has a different workflow and this changes the board.

You are right, the boards are initially created from the filter selected (which dictates the workflow). In this case, filter = 1 or multiple workflows, so both your questions a equivalent.

Jean again thanks

Jean

Just a thought, are you using cloud based application or a downloaded version, windows, mac etc?

could this account for the differences ?

Carl

The only difference between a Business project board and a software project board is that you cannot create a board directly from the Business project (or access it directly from the project interface).

There is a slight difference between our versions, here is where you need to go in yours ... > board settings > columns :

Hope this helps,

Hello @Carl Rees

The workflow associated with your board is according to the filter you use for the board.

For example, if your filter is something like : 'project = abc AND issuetype = def', the workflow used for the board will be the one that def uses for this project. So it is possible to have statuses from multiple workflows on the same board.

If there is nothing on your board, it is probably because you did not map the statuses to your columns after changing the filter (workflow).

You can change the column mapping by going to : Board > Configure > Columns

Then make sure to move all needed statuses from the Unmapped statuses column to one of the existing columns.

Hope this helps,
