Build Numbers in bugs

We have several builds every week. We want to be able to report the version number and build number. What's the best way to do this? Should I add a freeform field that can be entered? Is there a better way?

As you said you can use a free text field. Or a select list (provided you have Jira adminitrator rights, as options for the custom fields can only by set by Administrators). Remember, if you a free text field, you will not be able to use it in the different reporting gadgets (if you want to make reports based on the build field).

We're not using Bamboo. We want to expand the Affects Version and Fixed Version fields to include both version number and build number.

I'd prefer not to create a version with build number version for each one.

Are you using Bamboo? Or is this just with Jira? Could you please add a bit more details to the question?
