CSV import to a Next-gen project ignores Custom fields

Is the importing of custom fields supported for next-gen projects? I am able to import custom fields fine into a classic project.

I suspect that this is related to the notion of of custom fields having to be available to all projects?! The next-gen projects custom fields show up just fine in the field mapping, but nothing ever gets populated. 

Any advice?
