Can I make the Approval step based on a condition in the workflow

Hi,

I'd like to set up a workflow that has approvals as an optional step depending on the form that has been submitted. So I'd like to to check whether or not approval is required for the form and then send it onto the next step of either waiting for approval or waiting for support. 

Hoping someone can point me to some documentation, or give me a rough outline of how to do it? I'm stuck at the mo!
