Can we add sprint to a business project?

Vini Vijayvargiya November 7, 2022

Hi,

We are trying to create a project for project management which can drill down to the lowest level and also allows us to create sprints from there. Is it possible? Currently, we are managing a separate software project that allows us to create sprint but we can't track it as part of overall project management.

Thanks.

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Not quite, but you can get a partial impartial implementation of it.

Sprints do not belong to projects, they are artefacts of a Scrum board.  Process Management projects don't have Scrum boards, so you can't do it that way.

But you can create a Scrum board in a Software project (or a personal board).  These boards can be based on filters, so if you write a filter for "Project = my business project" and create your board using that, you'll get a Scrum board, and hence the ability to use sprints with your business project issues in it.  You may have to think about adding estimation fields to your project, look at the project permissions for people, and how the workflow is mapped onto the board.

Thanks @Nic Brough -Adaptavist-

I am new to Jira, will you be able to share screenshot or example for this. I tried but couldn't really see that level of detail.

Screenshots won't help you

As I already said, but with a bit more text:

Create. a filter that includes the project you want, and save it

Go to your-work -> boards -> view all boards -> create board (personal or in a project)

Create a board from your filter

@Nic Brough -Adaptavist-

I follow your approach. 😊

The purpose of sprint planning is to define what can be delivered in the sprint and how that work will be achieved. Sprint planning is done in collaboration with the whole scrum team.

Hope Jira will give provision to offer feature of giving sprint planning to Business Project also.

I do not think Atlassian are ever going to do this.  They are very wedded to Scrum, Kanban, and Agile in general, so I doubt they will ever do things that dilute this.

We added Epics and Versions to a Business Project - while not perfect, it allows us to capture large projects as Epics, and we can roll work up into our quarterly roadmap (as the Version). For background, most of my company uses Software Projects on Development and Engineering teams. My team uses a Business Project as we are closer to Project Management. We don't operate within releases and thus we don't have the need for a rigid sprint structure.

Thanks @Dave Buitenhek

Was trying to integrate software projects and business project for overall visibility, so this helps.

Hi @Vini Vijayvargiya  Welcome to Atlassian Community!

Process Management project template is different from Software Development project template. In Process Management, you don't an option to create Scrum or Kanban board.

Even if you add a Sprint field, you can't get an option to select Sprints which are created in Software project. If you have Sprint planning then go for Scrum Project.

Thanks

It's the same answer - you'll need to create a Software board that includes it, from another project.
