Can we easily migrate from Jira On-premise setup to Jira Cloud?

If so, how easy or difficult is the process?

What are the steps involved to migrate?

Can we use Jira mobile apps for Jira On-prem hosting?

Hi @udaykiran joshi ,

Welcome to Atlassian Comumunity!

Can we easily migrate from Jira On-premise setup to Jira Cloud?

If so, how easy or difficult is the process?

Its hard to say - we don't know nothing about your Jira instance (Usecases, size of Jira, Addons and etc.).

However, Atlassian has Cloud migration guide for this purposes and offer Jira Cloud Migration Assistant for free.

Can we use Jira mobile apps for Jira On-prem hosting?

Yes, you can - https://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/mobile-app

Thanks Pavel. I'm going through the above documentation. We are planning to have around 300 licences to start with. We would prefer a cloud solution. However, considering the stringen rules and compliance parameters, it may take a lot of time for us to get approval. So we were planning to first go with On-prem option first and then migrate to Cloud gradually.

While going through the documentation I came across Server & Data center options. However somehow I'm not able to find the exact diff between a Server and Data center option. Can you please help me understand these differences?

Hi,

Thank you for more information about your Atlassian environment.

Server or Data Center is that same solution - On Premise. Server option is "dead" solution (Atlassian has decided: "End of Life Server edition" from 15.2.2024).

Data Center version has more features that Server version - Jira Server and Data Center feature comparison

@udaykiran joshi , migrations usually require additional effort in terms of accurate data transfer. There are plenty of tools available. One of them is ZigiOps. It's a 3rd party solution. It can help you connect the instances and transfer only the data you want to be transferred. It happens easily and relevantly fast, without limitations and delays. Check out ZigiOps and even book a short demo (it's free and non-binding) to see how it manages your use case.

Regards, Diana (ZigiOps team)

Hi @udaykiran joshi

Welcome to Atlassian Community!

Migration is typically complex as you need to re-setup all add-ons, and projects (including renaming projects as some characters, including underscore, are not allowed in Cloud projects), team training, migrating all the data along with history to the cloud, followed by validation and cut over. Given that you are looking for 300 seats in the cloud, I assume there will also be a large volume of data to be migrated, and hence it will take some time to completely migrate to the cloud and cut over.

Under these circumstances, one thing that I will strongly recommend is to go for a migration tool that can migrate your data from on-premises to on-cloud, without any downtime, i.e., a migration tool that allows on-premises users to continue using it while the migration is going on – resulting in zero downtime. Zero downtime removes any impact on operations while the migration is going on and gives you sufficient time to validate the migrated data.

Looking at the options for migration from Jira to Jira on cloud, there are two broad approaches:

  1. Use Jira’s Cloud Migration Tool: Jira provides a native migration tool. It does involve some downtime and migration of plugin data needs to be checked based on the individual plug-ins.
  2.  Use a 3rd part migration tool: Use 3rd party industry-accepted tools with richer migration support and better support.

OpsHub has extensive experience in undertaking complex migration projects ensuring zero downtime, no data loss, systematic cut-over, and factory approach. We are happy to help in your migration planning process. Please reach out to us for an initial free consultation on migration planning with our solutions architects.

Thanks
