Hi @hari kishan Chowdary

This is Dhiren from Exalate. I was just wondering if you are open to use a 3rd Party tool like Exalate for this purpose.

Exalate, provides a fully bi-directional synchronization between HP ALM and Jira (among other ITSM systems) that is fully customizable. Although Exalate is built as an integration solution but it can also be used for Migration purpose as well.

You may refer to this doc for more info on what's supported with Exalate.

If you would like to see a customized demo of the product in action, feel free to book a slot with us.

Thanks,

Dhiren

Hi @hari kishan Chowdary

As mentioned in the previous answer, Jira is not a Test Management Tool. I suggest you start by deciding on the structure of the Test Data on Jira. A few of the possible options are:

  1. Create custom issue types for each test data you want to maintain
  2. Use third-party Jira Test Management add-ons. E.g., Jira Zephyr, Jira Xray, Jira QMetry, etc.

Once you have decided on Test Data Structure, you need to shortlist a migration solution that can support the selected custom issue types or the Jira add-on. Choosing the right migration solution for the problem at hand will not be a black-and-white selection. First, you need to define the must-haves you expect from migration and then evaluate the different migrators available in the market.

The following evaluation criteria can be considered when evaluating a third-party migration tool.

  • Data Loss: Understand what all data the tool can migrate, such as Defects (along with history, attachments, mentions, and inline images) and test management, including Test Sets, Test Execution, Test Folders, Test Results, and the data that the tool cannot migrate.
  • Downtime: Downtime adds operational costs and impacts development operations as teams cannot use HP ALM and Jira during ongoing migration. There should be no scenario where downtime is required for any type of data to be migrated. As part of the evaluation, validate that no downtime is involved that can cause business disruption.
  • Skills Required: Some tools are a collection of unsupported beta versions of scripts, requiring a very high degree of sophistication. These can be highly time-consuming, error-prone, and can hinder operations. As part of the evaluation, analyze what part of migration may require script and involvement from your side.

OpsHub, an Atlassian partner, has extensive experience in undertaking complex migration projects, ensuring zero downtime, no data loss, systematic cut-over, and a factory approach, which can be an excellent choice for your use case. It supports the migration of the entities, Test, Test Set, Test Set Folder, Test Plan Folder, Test Run, Cycle, Release, Execution Request, etc., from Micro Focus ALM to the entities, Test, Test Cycle, Test Execution, etc. on Jira add-on. And Defects can be migrated as Bugs on Jira.

Please reach out to OpsHub’s Migration Experts for an initial free consultation on migration planning.

Thanks

Brad

@hari kishan Chowdary hi there! If you're still looking for a migration solution, take a look at ZigiOps. It's a no-code integration tool that can also be used for migration. It can help you accomplish the migration of HP ALM to Jira easily and without limitations on the data you want to migrate. Check it out and if you think the ZigiOps tool would be useful, feel free to contact us so we could take a look at your use case.

Regards, Diana (ZigiWave team)

Hello @hari kishan Chowdary

Welcome to the community.

What data are you trying to migrate from HP ALM to Jira?

HP ALM, as I recall, has at least two major features; test case and execution tracking, and issue/bug tracking. What features are you using?

Jira is a issue/work tracking tool natively. You could migrate issue/bug data from HP ALM to Jira. Jira is not natively a test case management tool but there are third party apps you can add to Jira to add that functionality.

As I said, Jira is not natively a test case/plan/execution tracking tool. If you want that type of functionality within Jira you will need to look for a third party app that extends Jira's capabilities for that.

Regarding how to execute the migration, if you want to handle that yourself then you can find a variety of posts that discuss that topic if you search the internet.

Or you can engage with a consulting company such as the Atlassian Solution Partners to help your company with that migration.
