Can you increase Char limits on test fields in JIRA

I am setting up JIRA Server and trying to configure LDAP. The User Object Filter field is by default 255 char and I need to increase that for my filter. We have modified the db, reindexed, restarted and rebooted JIRA.  We are still receiving truncation errors when trying to add more than 255 char into the field. Why isnt the application recognizing the db changes?

Never found a solution, Workaround was to create multiple directories to split up the filter.
