Cannot move a task from one active sprint to another active sprint

Nida Maqsood October 7, 2021

I have a task in ''wk'' sprint. I want to move it to another active sprint but I cannot get a drop-down that gives options to move that task to another sprint. Moreover, that task is not showing in backlog and in any active sprints when I search from backlog. But opening that task shows ''wk'' sprint name in it. It has no sub-task in it.

Is this "task" a sub-task of a story (or any other issue at the level of story)?

Nida Maqsood October 8, 2021

Yes, There is an ''Epic'' then a ''Bug'' in it then this specific ''bug'' is in it.

Epic(No Sprint) --> Bug(wk sprint) --> The task I want to change Sprint (wk sprint)

No, sorry, that's not quite what I was talking about.  "Is story in an epic" is not the same as "is the bug a sub-task".

Jira Software has three levels in a hierarchy:

  1. Epic (can be linked to issues to indicate a parent link)
  2. Issue (story, bug, could be called anything, can contain sub-tasks)
  3. Sub-task (again, could be called anything)

I'm asking if your task (or bug) is at the bottom level of that hierarchy, or if it's in the middle?

Nida Maqsood October 8, 2021

at the bottom level

Ok, thanks, that explains it!

Sub-tasks are not sprint items, they are a part of their containing story.  They do not go into a sprint independently, you can only say they are in a sprint when the thing of which they are a part is in the sprint.  Equally, they are not part of a backlog as anything other than part of their parent story.

To move this type of issue from one sprint to the next, you need to move its story, the actual sprint-able item, which will carry the sub-task with it.

Is the problem confined to just this one task? Could this be a permissions issue?

Nida Maqsood October 8, 2021

Yes, this problem is occurring on only one task. How can this be a permission issue from admin account?

Hello, @Nida Maqsood ;

Have you tried to move it to the wk sprint to the backlog and laterm from the backlog to the new active sprint?

Nida Maqsood October 7, 2021

I cannot move this task into backlog. This task is not visible in Backlog. When I search this task. It shows there are no issues matching. But opening a scrum board shows this task.
