Child issues not showing up

James Walters

Hi there, I'm having a weird issue. I've set up a new board, but when I add child issues to either Epics or Tasks, they initially show up, but if I click off the Epic or refresh the page, they disappear from the preview.

They still display in the Timeline (when it comes to tasks), but not in the preview:

No child issues.png

If I open the Epic or the Task directly in a new window, the child tasks are also hidden, so it's not limited just to the Timeline preview:

No child issues 2.png

If I add a new Task or Subtask, the list will display again:

No child issues 3.png

However, if I refresh or click off then back onto the Task, the child issues vanish. They're still present and can be searched for, but don't display on the parent ticket:

No child issues 4.png

It's only happening in new boards, though - I have two other boards, one on the same user, which is displaying normally:

Child issues 5.png

And another separate user account I use for work:

Child issues 6.png

These other boards both display fine, so I'm confused as to what the issue might be with this new board...

I've tried deleting and creating a new board, to see if it was a random issue, but this same issue occurs on any new software project board (team managed) I set up.

Thanks for the answers, folks - turns out it was just a temporary issue that's now resolved itself. Must have just been a glitch as Jira moved onto the new navigation format :)

I have this exact same issue on a board created today.

It seems like it's something that either fixes itself, or just needs some time for stuff in the background to 'align'. Hopefully the Jira team will patch it soon so it just works immediately.

Having to wait for it would be frustrating...Good luck :)

Me and my colleagues can confirm this issue. Interestingly if you refresh the page like 3-10 times, the child issues do show up, although it is not 100%, this works in about 70% of attempts.

We suspect there might be some rate limiting on requests on this feature, which hits the limit. So probably a bug.

Yup same happening with us - selecting the View In search via the ellipsis menu option, then clicking back fixed it. vis.png

I am getting a very similar problem, with a strange work-around

1. When I open an issue/story, none of my sub-tasks display

1 No children.jpg

2. I then press "view in search" - right hand side of the sub-tasks

2 View in search.jpg

3. I then get these items in the search window

3. Search window.jpg

4. I then press the back button in my browser (Google Chrome, but also in Edge) and I can now see the children sub-tasks.

4 children showing.jpg

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

I face the same and it is not Fixing itself so far.

I double check and can confirm that all settings and configurations are correct.

-The Parent - Child relation is set correctly.  (child has the parent in the field "parent".

Problem is not related to any boards- or plans-settings, It appears also directly of the screen of the parent issue.

It shows one item done, but there is no way to find what item that is.

I do think it is a bug, because it was functioning correctly in the past. It is not in all cases, but I couldn't diagnose when and when not.

I agree this looks like a bug. It isn't a "fix" to keep clicking in and out of "view in search"

This is a bug that my teams are also experiencing.

Nothing has changed on the project except for the below

  1. JIRA's switch to the tabular / custom column view for child issues
  2. JIRA's switch to New Navigation (Transposing side toolbar and header toolbar)

We have not changed our issue hierarchy or relationships. In the below screenshot I am on a JIRA Epic #4090, which has 2 children. However none appear from the Epic's Child Work Item Section. When querying for the child items, you can see the 2 children. This makes it quite difficult to manage ongoing work.

I've ensured I'm not hiding Done items... and while refreshing does not seem to work in this case the problem is inconsistent on other Epics.

Hi @James Walters

welcome to the community,if child issues are not showing then there will be one of the following

Check Issue Type Hierarchy

  • Jira needs to recognize the parent-child relationship (like Epic → Story → Sub-task).
  • Go to:
Jira Settings → Issues → Issue Type Hierarchy

In the Issue View:

  • Open a parent issue (Story/Task) → check the “Child issues” panel.
    • If it’s missing, they might not be linked properly or are using the wrong issue type.

Make Sure Child Issues Are Actually Linked

  • Sub-tasks: Must be created as Sub-tasks, not just linked issues.
  • Stories under Epics: Must have the “Epic Link” field filled out.

Permissions Issues

  • You may not have access to the child issues due to:
    • Project permissions
    • Issue security levels

        Ask your Jira admin if:

  • You have Browse Projects permission
  • The issue has a Security Level that hides it from you

Hope this helps

Hi Pasam, the issue fixed itself, the child issues now display just fine. Think it was just a glitch with the movement onto the new display system Jira implemented.

Hi @James Walters

Is this company managed project or team managed project?

Try to enable child level issues in the board configuration>> Timelines by using below link.
Unable to view child issues under an Epic when using Jira Software Roadmaps | Jira and Jira Service Management | Atlassian Support

Hi Sanam, it's team managed. Looks like it's an issue that fixed itself - the best kind!
