Clone project with its fields and workflows(Not issues)

Naresh Rajak July 8, 2025

Hello, I have a need to clone a project with its fields and workflows. I do not want to bring issues. I can add users manually as its a handful users. Please suggest an optimum way. There is no option that I could see to 'exclude' issues in 'import data' option.

Thank you

Regards

Naresh

Hi Naresh,

You can use the Revyz Configuration Manager for Jira app to do that (assuming as Trudy says that it is not a Team-managed project). You can do a free trial and accomplish what you want.  There is also the Deep Clone app as well. Both are excellent.

Hello @Naresh Rajak

What is the project type of the project you want to clone?

Get that information from the Type column on the View All Projects page under the Projects menu.

For Company Managed projects a new project can be made that uses the same configuration as another specified Company Managed project. However, they share the exact same configuration elements; if you change a workflow it affects both projects. This process does not make a copy of each of the configuration elements for the new project.

The above cannot be applied to a Team Managed project at this time.

If you want copies of the configuration elements that can be modified without affecting the source project, there is not a UI option to do that with a single button click. There are third party apps that can help you accomplish that.

Hi @Naresh Rajak

Since Jira's built-in functionality doesn't allow you to clone a project with its configurations (fields, workflows) without bringing along issues, I recommend using our app Deep Clone for Jira.

With Deep Clone, you can effortlessly clone Jira projects without issues, while retaining important configurations like:

  • Workflows and Fields: Clone project schemes, including Workflow schemes, Field Configuration schemes, Issue Security schemes, Issue Type schemes, and more.
  • Advanced Project Clone: Clone team-managed projects without bringing over issues.
  • Boards: You can even clone board configurations of your company-managed projects.

This gives you an exact copy of your project's configurations—without any issues.

For further details, check our documentation on Project Clone.

Hi Naresh,

Please create new project with shared configuration of current project, this option clones the Fields & workflows as per your need and won't include issues.

Create a project that shares its configuration with another project

https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/create-a-new-project/

Just make sure if you want to make any changes to configuration you create New Schemas & entities else it will get updates to both the projects.

Regards,

Shubham

@Naresh Rajak  @Shubham Burghate

This is what I was referring to in my reply.

Note that the term "clone" is typically used to mean making a copy of something. This Share Configuration does not make copies of the fields and workflows. The originals are used by both the original project and the new project. Changes to the configurations of these items would affect both projects

And this option is available only for Company Managed projects.
