Hi,

When cloning an epic is there a way to clone any child issues at the same time. I do select that option however it only ever clones the epic.

Hello @Lejla Delic

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

What type of project are you using? Get that information from the Type column on the View All Projects page under the Projects menu.

Are the child issues and the Epic in the same project?

When I use the native Clone option to clone an Epic in a Company Managed project I see these options. Are these the same options that you see?

There is no option there to clone the child issues. Subtasks are not the same as the child issues of the Epic. The native cloning functionality does not support cloning the child issues of an Epic when the Epic is cloned. You could create an Automation Rule that you could trigger manually to clone an Epic and its child issues. Or you could consider a third party app that provides extended cloning capabilities. There are a few such apps.

If those are not the options that you see, you may be using a Clone feature provided by a third party app. In that case can you provide a screen image of what you see for options?

Hi Trudy,

Thanks for your response. I am using a Company Managed project and they are all under the same project. I get that exact pop-up window and the options to select subtasks, but I was not aware of the difference between the subtasks and child issues in this instance. Thanks for clarifying.

Yes, in this case when it offers the option for Subtasks it means issues that are specifically issue types within the subtasks issue type group. Generally Epics don't have Subtasks associated directly to them and the default issue type hierarchy is

Epics > standard level issues > subtasks

Hi @Lejla Delic and welcome to the community!

If you're looking for a seamless way to clone an Epic along with all its child issues in one step, our app Deep Clone for Jira offers exactly this capability. Deep Clone allows you to create full, structured copies of Epics with all their child issues, including standard issue types, subtasks, and custom fields with its Epic/Tree Clone feature.

Deep Clone for Jira provides flexibility in cloning, allowing you to:

  • Clone entire issue hierarchies from Epics to tasks, subtasks.
  • Preserve details such as attachments, comments, and issue links.
  • Clone issues across projects, or keep them within the same project as needed.

Hello @Lejla Delic

If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to clone epics with their child issues I can suggest trying our app Elements Copy & Sync.

You’ll be able to clone a full hierarchy of issues with all their content (summary, description, custom fields, comments, attachments, etc).

You can check the guide here.

The app is for free during 30 days (and it stays free under 10 users).
