Close a task

Lloyd Francis October 17, 2023

How do you close a task on the high user unfriendly Jira? I can see the flow chart and have completed the task but cannot close it.

Hi @Lloyd Francis,

Welcome to Atlassian Community!

It all depends on how your workflow is configured if you have a Closed status or another status that indicate that the task is done. In the issue view you should see different workflow status up on the right hand side that the task can move to. In Jira Cloud that is a dropdown, on Jira DC that should be buttons.

Thankyou for the answer. I have tried all of the buttons and none of them close the issue. I have also tried moving boxes on the flowchart and this does not work. What specific buttons do I need to click on?

I have the following buttons: Edit, Add Comment, Assign, More, Allocate.

On the far right there are two buttons one with a diagram in it and one with Export in it.

So it sounds like your workflow is requiring something to be entered or you need to be in the right group/role. If you can share your workflow it would be easier to tell what is going on.

Hi @Lloyd Francis

Could you share your workflow chart and tell us what status the issue your are trying to close is in?

To see a Close workflow action, assuming your workflow has such an action, the action must be available to the current workflow status or defined as a shared action available from any status.

Can you close any issue? If you don’t have the close option it’s possible your permissions could be set to not close or resolve an issue.

Look at the permission scheme for the event Close Issue and see if your role has that permission. The other possible reason could be what the other mentioned. Is this task linked to another ticket?

Hi @Lloyd Francis

To elaborate what @Mikael Sandberg referred to:  A ticket can be closed if it reaches the following three status in the below workflow:-

So if you are mapping the ticket in some of the completed statuses of your workflow and in project columns mapping those tickets are mapped properly, your should be able to close the ticket.

Note: A ticket can only be deleted by an administrator.
