Hi there!

We're trying to build a dynamic budget tracker that pulls and summarizes values from custom fields, separated by labels, either in Jira or confluence, but I haven't yet found a satisfying solution.

Setup:

  • Jira & Confluence Cloud
  • Project type: Company managed, blank project
  • relevant custom fields: Budget (numeric), label (defines a certain budget owner)
  • JQL filter already created that retrieves all issues from that certain project and label

While setting up the blank project I noticed that the "list" feature within the new project layout already ticks 90% of the boxes.

I personalized the appearance by selecting the relevant custom fields (mostly "budget") but didn't find any possibility to summarize and display the values of the custom field "budget" across all tickets in this view.

Since the project includes issues from various budget owners, we distinguish them by using labels, for which we can also filter using the default filter option of the project/kanban board.

At the other hand, I tried to mirror the appearance of this issue list in confluence but came to no satisfying solution. We're not interested in adding any marketplace software, therefore it should be an Atlassian feature, personalized to our needs, with custom JQL filters of necessary.

The ideal outcome would be:

  1. For the selected label
    1. Display a list of all issues incl. defined fields (Delivery date, client, budget, etc)
    2. Retrieve all values from custom field "budget"
    3. Sum the values from all "budget" fields and display it

Is there any way to achieve this using Jira or Confluence core functionalities?

Many thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Hi @Ronja Schlegel

Let me try to help.

  1. Make sure the field is added in the screen associated with the issue type. To simple create a list of issues with your preferred fields you can always create a filter for yourself and save it/share it.
  2. Jira search/filter or lists will not perform any calculations for you. Some native dashboard gadgets will give you a count (not sum). So you will have to rely on other reporting apps. My recommendation would be to use eazyBI. You can always export data outside Jira to an Excel or build some automation to retrieve data using REST API.
  3. I answered above.

However I would still recommend to think again about what level of budgeting you want to do in Jira. Potentially Jira can be used for light weight budgeting. There are apps like Tempo Budgets. Jira essentially is an issue tracker so using it as a budgeting tool might not work in a long run.

I hope it helps.
