Create issue screen - Description field displays with markup rather than autoformatting

Those new to the Atlassian Community have posted less than three times. Give them a warm welcome!
Hi, we'd like to have the create issue description field auto format with the final formatting, rather then display the text with markup, and apply the formatting once it's saved.
I've searched around my screen and fields settings and haven't stumbled upon anything that will switch it over, but I'm sure I'm missing it somewhere.
