Creating an automation rule - The issue creator should automatically become a watcher

Seth Pullen May 30, 2025

Hi All, I could use your help.  I've lost automation in the new navigation and the "help" articles aren't updated.

We used to have the issue creator made a watcher by default.  Atlassian product folks have apparently undone this....  So I'm guessing I need to create an automation rule to make this happen.

Question 1 - Does the setting still exist somewhere?  How do I navigate to it?

Question 2 - Assuming the specific configuration does not exist, how do I navigate to automation?  What automation steps would work?

Thanks very much for your help, it is appreciated.

Hi, @Seth Pullen

You can find project Automation rules here:
https://your_domain.atlassian.net/jira/software/c/projects/PRJ_KEY/settings/automate

Use this smart value, to add reporter to watchers:

{{issue.reporter}}

Final rule will look like:

Hello @Seth Pullen ,

1. The new Navigation will not impact any existing configuration you have be it workflow, Automation rule or anything

There are 2 ways to find your rule, either via project settings or via Global Automation.

New Navigation I agree that can be a challenge to find

From the left side section look for Project section and locate your project and click on 3 dots, you will find project settings there.

Refer this document: Jira’s new navigation
