Database Setup

I am trying to setup the Database for Jira. I have the software and the database on two different virtual servers. I have the created the Jira database on a different instance (not on default). When I do the database setup,  and test the connection, it fails saying "Login failed for the user". I did create the database and the user as per the documentation giving the necessary permissions.

What db type do you use (mysql, postgres), is it possible to access the db server from the host that jira runs?
