Default Issue Navigator

Jim Bailey December 22, 2011

When I share a filter I want to be sure others on the project have the same columns as I do. The project has several custom fields. I don't want everybody else to have to configure their navigator (add the columns).

I've read that I will need to update the Default Issue Navigator by adding in the custom fields.

If I do this how do I ensure those columns will show for just the project I'm working in. I don't want the added columns to show on all projects with our Jira application.

It's as if I need an "Issue Navigator scheme" which I don't think exists in Jira.

I searched the old Jira forum. It said I needed to add my custom field to the default issue navigator for someone else on my project to see the custom field in my shared filter if they don't want to configure their navigator.

I don't want to have to ask 10 customers on my project to configure their navigator.

Which is correct?

When you say "set the layouts for them" do you mean get their password, log in, and configure their navigator?

Neither is correct, you're missing the point. The navigator cannot be defined by a project.

As I said, you can add the field to the default navigator - it will then appear for anyone still using the default navigator. If any of your 10 customers have customised their navigator, then you'll need to get them to add the field to their navigator. Most importantly though, whatever you do, the field will only appear if the filter currently being displayed only includes issues for which the field is available.

Also, as I said, you can "set the layouts" for saved filters, not people.

Ah, no, you can't quite do this, and there's a good reason - the issue navigator is nothing to do with a project, so there's no way to say "use navigator layout X for project". It wouldn't make sense - how would you know what project to use when the user isn't actually in a project? You're only "in a project" when you're on the project screen or an issue - the navigator is outside them. Worse, what happens when they define a filter for more than one project? Which layout would you use then? As you can see, it's basically not a valid proposition.

What you can do is

  1. Edit the default navigator that everyone gets by default
  2. Any individual can have their own default navigator layout
  3. Save filters, and set the layouts for them (they will then default to your layout if a user goes to them, with the option for them to swap to their layout)

Also, bear in mind that Jira will not display columns that are not present for any of the results. So if you have 5 projects, each with their own custom field, you can put all five of those on the default issue navigator, and the user will only see the column relevant to their project when their filter is only returning data from that project.
