I think I've read about this at some point, but I can't seem to find the question or documentation. I'm trying to revive an old custom dropdown field.

I have...

  • a custom dropdown field: "Goal"
  • set the description under Settings > Issues > Custom Field > "Goal" to [text I want to show users]
  • re-added the field to the context we use
  • added the field to the issue type I want

However, when I go to view the field on the issue type, there's the (i) symbol that pops up a tooltip with text.

That tooltip text isn't the description of my field.

Where do I edit the tooltip text for a custom field?

The tooltip is added at two places, both under Settings > Issues > Custom fields and also in the field configuration that the project is using. If you change the description under custom fields it will not carry over to the field configuration.

Thank you, Mikael! It was the field configuration override that I remembered hearing about but couldn't find.

Documentation to edit field configuration: Atlassian: Add, edit, and delete a field configuration

Issues > Field configurations > [your configuration] > Configure

It leads you to an edit screen that looks like (photo below), with a text box and the text I was seeing in the tooltip.

Deleting the field description under the field configuration (reset to blank) and saving allowed the custom field description to flow through.

I could also edit the tooltip text here, if I wanted something different to show up in this field configuration.

Hello @Casey Gould ,

The Custom Field Description in the Field Configuration is overwriting the Custom Field Description from the Custom Fields configuration page.

Below are the steps to remove or update the previous description.

  1. Go to Field Configuration and locate the configuration that is used by the affected issue type.
  2. In this configuration, click configure and locate the affected custom field.
  3. Once you have located the custom field, you should notice that it is still having the previous description.
  4. Click Edit, and change or remove the description.
  5. The previous description should now be removed and replaced with the new description.

This article has listed out all steps.

Hello @Casey Gould

I have not been able to reproduce what you are experiencing.

The hover help should come from the Description associated with the field in the Field Configuration that applies to that issue type.

Have you double checked that the Field Configuration for that particular issue type is showing the information you expect?

Hi @Trudy Claspill - As Mikael was able to remind me above, the tool tip text comes from the Custom Field description (under Issues > Custom Fields) by default but can be overridden by any text entered via the field configuration (Issues > Field Configuration).
